I hope they make a series hybrid police car. 100% electric drivetrain would be unstoppable and un-beatable, and with efficient on-board biogas-fueled generators to keep the batteries charged, the carbon footprint would be next to nothing.

The police car market is huge, and I know Ford can make a great police car, I've driven Crown Victorias as a taxi for over 5 years now, and they are great cars. Durable, safe, comfortable, easy to get in and out of, huge trunk, easy to drive. If they use carbon fiber instead of steel for the shell and make it a series hybrid, you could go 300 miles in a full sized car on a gallon or two of gas; everything would be perfect :)

Why are they discontinuing the Crown Victoria? There is no accident they are the most common taxi vehicle, they are all used police cars. With maintenance those cars can run another 200,000+ miles. If they were electric drive they would likely run longer. Changing police car designs reduces emissions in an enormously significant way. A taxi can be driven as much as 8,000 miles a month! Let's do some math:

8,000 / 18 = 444 gallons (on current vehicle with ecodriving)

8000 / 50 = 160 gallons (current high mileage hybrids)

If Ford made a police car that got 50 miles to the gallon, after using that car and selling it for use as a taxi, that action would save 284 gallons of gasoline, which comes out to about 2.75 tons of carbon a month per car. Pretty noticeable considering the number of police cars and taxis in the world.

My 2 cents :)

Thanks for the post, great stuff :D
